  17. Hi Year One,
I'm so glad you are going to Italy this week. I just love Italy - the food is fabulous and I love the way EVERYONE goes home for lunch and a rest in the middle of the day. They call this "siesta". For Italians, family is very very important and they spend a lot of time with their family, eating lunch together every day rather than at work.
If you love history, you will love all the ancient ruins. It's amazing really that some of those buildings that were built before Jesus was born, are still there (though they're so old that they're falling down).
Rome has a subway - an underground railway. It's a very slow process building new subway track because the builders keep discovering old ruins from Roman times that are now underground. This is because the city of Rome is built on top of the old city. The workmen have to stop building and call in the archeologists every time they find ruins so this stops work on the subway for weeks. Better to take a bus!

  18. Here are some answers to your inquiry questions 1Blue...

Aidan and Jadrian asked Why is the Colosseum so famous?

It is famous because ti is a structure belonging to Ancient Rome, built nearly 2000 years ago The Colosseum still stands today! It seats around 45000 - 55000 people. The Colosseum once hosted gladiator competitions and other battles. It is still a major tourist attraction in Rome.

Marissa asked Why is the Italian flag green, white and red?

There are a few answers to this one Marissa. Some believe that green stands for hope, white is for faith and red is for charity. Other people say that the colours represent different governments in history.

Charlie and Luis asked Why is The Colosseum broken?

The Colosseum is in ruins because it is a very, very old building. It has been standing for almost two thousand years. It is a very old structure that has not been repaired over time.

William and Tye asked Why did The Leaning Tower of Pisa sink?

The Leaning Tower of Pisa continues to sink because the soil it was built in, is unstable. When the architects designed it, they failed to realise that the soil underneath was unstable and that a 3metre foundation to support the tower would not be enough. After the first three stories were built the ground began to sink, and the tower began to lean. Today, people who visit the tower still climb one side of it - can you believe it!
