Hi 1Blue I have read your questions that you typed the other day and have answers for some of them. You asked .....
Q.How was Uluru formed? A.Ayres rock was formed when sand piled up at the bottom of an ocean that once covered part of Australia. The sand remained there over time and became what we know as Uluru.
Q. How was Australia named? A. There are many different ideas as to how Australia got its name. Geographers believe Australia comes from the latin term "Terra Australis Incognita" meaning "land of the south".
Q. Why is there a shield on the Coat of Arms? A. The shield is the focal point. It contains a badge of each Australian state - New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. The shield stands for each of the states in Australia.
Q. Why is Uluru red? A. Uluru is actually grey in colour, but has a thin skin which is red. The red colour comes from rust. The rock has iron in it and when it mixes with the air it turns to rust.
Q. Why does Ayres rock change colour at different times of the day? A. The position of the Sun determines the colour of the rock at different times in the day.
There are many answers to some of these questions. These are the ones I found to be the easiest to understand. Keep on asking those important questions. Happy blogging - Percy Penguin
Just wanted to answer Mia J's question about why Australia has marsupials.
There are three types of mammals - monotremes (which lay eggs, like the platypus and the echidna), marsupials (which have a pouch, like kangaroos, wombats and koalas) and placentals (like people, dogs and horses).
The monotremes and marsupials are the oldest sort and were protected from the invasion of the placentals as Australia, Antarctica and South America were separated from the rest of the land.
Now there are only marsupials in Australia and South America (it's too cold in Antarctica!!).
In answer to Jamie's question about the Australian flag, in 1900 (just before Australia was created as a country) they had a big competition for people to design a flag. Nearly 33,000 people put entries in. Expert judges picked their five favourite designs and combined them to make the Australian flag!
