Percy Visits China

This week Percy sent us a postcard from Beijing, the capital city of China.  He visited Tiananmen Square, The Great Wall of China, a zoo where he saw some giant pandas and the National Stadium (Bird's Nest). That was the one that had you all guessing what that strange looking building actually was! Here are some pictures Percy sent to us.

  15. Hi Year One, I just LOVE your new blog. How exciting that you can post all these photos online and see them at home and make comments! I was lucky enough to visit China last year. What a very different place! I went to the Great Wall. It was so hard to climb up the enORMous steps (especially because baby Charlie was asleep on my back and it was sooooo hot!). I especially loved the food. It was so cheap and so fresh. I ate jellyfish (that was a bit hard and rubbery) and some beautiful tasty stir fry dishes. The dumplings were the best. Beautiful soft sweet bread (steamed) around tasty spicy pork mince. We went to see the Forbidden City in Beijing where the Emporer used to live. That was amazing! Most of all, you just wouldn't believe how many people there are EVERYwhere, especially on the roads. The traffic is just WILD! Hopefully some of you will visit one day. Keep up the great blogging!
    Love,
    Mrs Mead

  18. Hi everyone, I would like to try and answer some of your questions.

Sam asked ... Why do Chinese people celebrate with dragons at New Year's festivities?....

    A. Chinese dragons are legendary creatures in many ancient Chinese stories. Chinese dragons symbolize power, strength and good luck. Chinese people believe they bring good luck and fortune to the New Year. The Emperor of China used the dragon as a symbol of his power. Clever and outstanding people are compared to the dragon.

Patrick asked ...Why is China's traditional dress the Qipao? Tough question Patrick!

    A. The qipao is a one piece dress made of silk and featured embroidery. It was made fashionable in the 1920's. It was once a baggy dress worn by the Chinese women.

Cora,Lara and Caley asked ... How long did it take to build The Great Wall of China? Another tough question with no definite answer.

A.?? The Great Wall of China is a collection of short walls. Some believe it took more than 2000 years to get to the final stage. Building began in 200BC. It has undergone reconstruction in recent times.

Aidan and Will asked ... Why was China's National Stadium (The Bird's Nest Stadium) built?

    A. The National Stadium was built for the 2008 Olympic games. It is made of steel and concrete. It has 91,000 seats. Archery, BMX biking and wrestling are some of the sports that were held in this stadium.

Tye and Charlie asked ... Why do they have lots of people in China?

The Chinese people started with good farming methods. People believe that good farming methods leads to more people settling in the one area. China's population also grew when one government wanted people to have large families, so the number of people grew. Later another government came to power and made a new rule, that families could only have one child because there were too many people in China.

  19. This is an answer to Tye and Charlie's question ... Why does China have lots and lots of people?

Another reason why China has lots and lots of people is because the Chinese tend to live a long and healthy life. The younger people in the family look after the older people (grandparents). The older people are happy and healthy and are another reason why China has a large population.
